Medical Missions

Oron Development Union Sponsored Medical Missions.

Outline:-

1. Introduction:

After the Nigeria independence, especially the 1960s and 1970s, the most notable accomplishments were the expansion of medical education; the improvement ofpublic health care facilities; the control of many contagious diseases, diseasevectors and the provision of primary health care facilities in many urban and rural communities. In the late 1980s, a large increase in vaccination againstmajor childhood diseases and a significant expansion of primary health careservices became the cornerstone of the government’s health policies. As a result of greed and corruption, compounded by the lack of accountability of our public officials and community leaders, many health and related problems persist to date. As would be expected, there is a sharp disparity in the availability of medical facilities, genuine drugs, equipment and supplies among regions, rural, urban and socio-economic classes within the nation. Inadequate sanitation, infrastructure, and poor clean water supply have increased the threat of infectious diseases like typhoid, diarrhea and food poisoning. Medical Mission is a transparent and direct form of health care delivery channel whereby, holistic Medical services are delivered to the rural, semi-rural and urban communities as a strategy to ameliorate the prevalent health problems these communities encounter. Medical Mission ensures direct delivery of health care services to the ultimate users through the efforts of volunteer medical and non-medical personnel, who collectively have a vision to serve and ensure the general well-being of humanity. In a country like ours (Nigeria), where there is overt and abject poverty; more than 80% of our population live without the means to obtain basic medical services from the few ill-equipped and scanty health facilities. It is sad to note that Oro, with a population estimated at over one million people can only boast of three “hospitals”. Consequently, there is an increase in morbidity and mortality from treatable diseases like Malaria, Tuberculosis, Asthma, Hypertension, Glaucoma, Diabetes, Breast and Lung Lancer, Prostate Cancer, Epilepsy, Diarrhea, Typhoid, Sexually Transmitted (STDs), Dermatological problems, Infections and the incurable menace of HIV/ AIDS, to name a few. Also, non-existent is emergency health care facilities to assist accident victims on land, air and sea.

Oro people are eternally grateful for the past medical missions sponsored by Oron Development Union, USA. By planning the forthcoming medical missions to Oro ascertains the importance the organization places on the health care and wellness of its people at home. Any society deprived of a decent health care system and wellness is subject to embracing the tenets of superstition which have claimed innocent lives in our communities, while destroying once respected families. On behalf of the Medical Mission Committee, I thank you all for this sacrifice.
