About Us

PREFACE

It is true that “there is no force, or destiny that can circumvent or hinder, or control, the firm resolve of a determined soul”. Three determined Oron son’s founded Oron Union on May 24th 1925 as a cultural organization to maintain, protect the unity and heritage of Oron, create better understanding among Oron people, and to assist in creative development of Oron religiously, culturally, educationally and economically. The founding fathers, Chief John Anwana Esin, Chief Ekpu Edubio Odoro and Chief Okon Eyokunyi Isong knew that without bringing Oron Citizens together to plant the seeds of unity, self-empowerment, and determination to enable them maintain their unique cultural identity; Oron Nation will encounter marginalization by other larger ethnic groups. The first meeting of the Union was attended by 88 people but the founders kept pushing on with no road map to guide them, armed only with determination to unite Oron people.

Faced with limited financial resources and challenges to embark on an immense scope as the journey they planned, one cannot help but marvel at their courage. The question to ask is why they did not give up trying, as evidenced in the fact that there were platitudes of external and internal forces that militated against their good intentions. Our guess is that the “Oro” in them as in most of us, kept them perpetually in motion towards their destinies and destinations in life. Their efforts paid off; Oron Development Union survived, and all attempts at fractionalizing the Union were negated, and the Union grew into one giant tree sprouting one branch after another. Some notable branches apart from the National Secretariat at Oron are: the Home branch, Lagos, Calabar, Kaduna, Abuja, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, London, Atlanta, Dallas, New York/New Jersey and Miami chapters.

AMERICAN

JOURNEY

Apart from Nigeria with the largest number of Oron Development Union members, Oron Development Union USA, Inc has the second largest membership. The American journey started in different cities, independent of each other until the formation of the National Organization in 1993. In 1987, Oron sons and daughters in Washington, D.C elected their first Officers with Dr. Clement Eyo as President and later as the first National President of ODU USA Inc. Similarly, Oron indigenes in Atlanta also began to meet monthly in early 1988 and nominated Mr. Eyo A. Eyo to run the affairs of the chapter. Soon after the formation, Atlanta started organizing fundraising activities annually to help fund the Union. In 1992 during the fundraising event organized by Atlanta Chapter, Oronians invited from different parts of United States agreed to form a committee to explore the possibility of organizing a National chapter of the Union. Members included Mr. Ita Ntekim, Mr. Asuquo Ating and Mr. Uwe O. Uko. Committee members mailed questionnaires to all Oronians for comments, inputs and suggestions. The response they received was overwhelming that they made a recommendation to the house for the formation and registration of Oron Development Union as a Non-Profit Organization. Mr. Ating Asuquo, the Atlanta Chapter President in preparation for the conference, labored tirelessly to pull off a successful conference. In 1993, Oron Development Union, USA was formally inaugurated. Members agreed in principle to adopt the Missions, Goals and Objectives of the home Union and further mandated the Incorporation of the Union with the appropriate authorities as a Non-Profit Organization. Conference nominated and approved the following members as the first National Executive under the careful and efficient moderation of Dr. Eno C. Otoyo who appointed Mr. Christopher Oyobio to be the Returning Officer.

Twenty years later with seven administrations headed by Dr. Clement Eyo, Prof. Bassey Eyo, Mr. Asuquo A. Ntuen, Mrs. Kate Ntekim, Mr. Christopher Oyobio, Lady Nkoyo Ekpo and Mr. Asuquo Anwana, the Union has progressively grown stronger. Presently, there are five active chapters of ODU USA, Inc: Atlanta, New York/New Jersey, Dallas, Miami and Maryland. Efforts are afoot to reactivate Houston, California and Washington DC chapters. Since its inception, ODU USA, Inc has successfully undertaken some development projects in the form of Medical Missions (1998-2012) and scholarship awards (2006-2012), and Bore-hole projects in 5 Local Government Council Areas of Oron (2003 – 2005). Our Union is a special heritage handed to us by those who came before us to be cared for, and safeguarded for prosperity, but like all inheritance, it has to be nurtured and groomed to ensure continuity.
